Intensive Diabetes Intervention May Halt Disease

This is good news in a different way. A cure is not completely promised, but it puts other options into play and meansthat bariatric surgery has competition. This is great becausebariatric surgery has been touted as the cure-all for type 2diabetes. Gastric bypass has not lived up to its promise as surgeonshad promised. Yes, we now know that is not true and more studies areproving this. Diabetes is returning in larger percentages thanpreviously realized and patients are unhappy. Weight is also comingback because of lack of education and lifestyle changes that are notstressed and educated about by the money hungry surgeons.
Now we have another alternative tobariatric and gastric bypass surgery. This is intensive diabetesintervention. This is also something that needs to be viewed withskepticism; however, this is better planned and education is part ofthe process. What is not talked about is maintaining the enthusiasmfor the process and the rate of weight loss. This needs to be a partof the education and part of the continuing education. The biggestadvantage is there are no surgery and other invasive medicalprocedures.
I always become skeptical whenresearchers claim total remission. When a patient returns toprevious bad habits, the diabetes will return. The study here isonly for a four-year period. Unless these studies continue, wecannot be sure of the outcome. The article sounds impressive andoffers hope of non-surgical success. Sometimes it takes intensiveintervention to start things, and I hope that these people get thecomplete education package they need to succeed.
Remissionrates were much higher among:1. People who lost a great deal of weight 2. People who became considerably fitter 3. People with shorter duration of extantdiabetes (those who had not had diabetes for long) 4. People with lower HbA1c at entry and notusing insulin”
These points from the study areimportant. The third and fourth points are probably discouraging formany, but I can understand the why and know that the longer you havediabetes, the less likely remission will be. At least this studyshows promise for extending the activity of preventing diabetes intothe early stages of diabetes.
